About this Artwork
A title that is a common noun
Reiter is the German word for rider. It names no one. That single fact moves the work out of the portrait category as this register understands it and into the class of type pictures: images that assert a role, a uniform or a way of being mounted rather than the standing of a particular man. The horse's function follows the shift. In a portrait the animal is an attribute of a named sitter; in a type picture it is equipment belonging to the role, and the man in the saddle is interchangeable.
What the record holds
The catalogue gives 1840 as the date of creation and the National Museum in Warsaw as the location — one of five works in this register held there. No dimensions are recorded; the field is empty. Romanticism is the style term and Polish the nationality attached to the painter. The categories are male portraiture together with Animal Art and Animal Art > Horse, and the measured colour family of the image is brown.
The tension in the record
The catalogue files this under male portraiture while the title supplies no name to portray. That is not necessarily an error — a study of a rider is still a picture of a man — but it is the kind of disagreement between title and tagging that a reader should see rather than have smoothed over.
