About this Artwork

Cavalry organised around an object that must not move

A standard is a fixed point in a fight. It marks where a unit is, it has to be defended, and taking it ends an argument. A picture built around one therefore shows the specific thing mounted troops were for: speed applied to a place. The horses supply the movement, the standard supplies the reason there is a centre at all, and the composition of such a subject turns on the difference between the two. That is a functional reading, and it is what the title supports.

What the record holds

The catalogue gives 1854 as the date of creation and the Dallas Museum of Art as the location. No dimensions are recorded. Orientalism is the style term and French the nationality attached to the painter. The categories are group portraiture, cultural heritage, mythology, religious and fantasy — and no animal heading of any kind, although the word Horsemen is in the title.

Two things this entry is not doing

It is not treating the fantasy and mythology tags as a statement about the subject; they are attached to a great many entries here that describe no myth. And it is not describing the fight. The record names a subject and a category; it does not report an engagement, a side or a place, and neither does this register. The measured colour family of the image is brown.
