About this Artwork
Two stalls, distinguished by one word
This register holds a pair of works by this painter, both dated 1878, both naming the same place and both naming a horse in a stable. The only difference between the two titles is the word describing the animal's coat. That is a catalogue telling you the pictures were made as a set and that the set was organised by individual animals — the sort of distinction that matters in a stable where every stall holds a different one. Their function in these pictures is nil: they are housed, not working, and the picture is a record of the housing.
What the record holds
The catalogue gives 1878 as the date of creation and a private collection as the location. The dimensions are 31 x 43 cm. Impressionism is the recorded style and French the nationality attached to the painter. The record files the work under still life and Animal Art > Horse, and the measured colour family of the image is red — which happens to agree with the colour word in the title, one of the few places in this register where the measured palette and the catalogued name of a work land on the same term.
What a coat word is not
The title's description of colour is a description of colour. This register does not identify breed and does not read one out of a coat term, because a catalogue record cannot support that kind of claim.
