About this Artwork
An animal identified by coat and place
The title gives a location, a coat description and a building. It gives no name, no owner and no task. In a catalogue arranged by function that is a specific kind of entry: the horse off duty, in the place where it waits between jobs. A stable is where the working animal is not working, and a picture made there is a picture of the interval rather than of the work.
A pair of records
This catalogue holds a second entry with the same place name, the same year and the same stable, distinguished only by the coat named in its title. The two are separate records. Whether one follows the other, or whether both describe the same animal, is not something the catalogue states, and this page does not settle it.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1878 and the location line reads Private Collection. The dimensions are 39 x 33 cm. The record gives Impressionism as the style term, French as the nationality, and red as the measured colour family of the image. Animal Art > Horse is the only subject heading the record carries at all.
