About this Artwork
Two figures, no task
The title pairs a boy and an animal and stops there. No vehicle, no saddle, no race and no field of work is named, which leaves the function open. That is the commonest situation in this catalogue and the one most often filled in by guesswork elsewhere. The record files the work under a river landscape heading and Animal Art > Horse.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1883 and the location is the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh. The dimensions are 15.9 x 24.8 cm, small enough to be a study on size alone, though the record does not use that word. Post-Impressionism is the style term on the record and French the nationality; the measured colour family of the image is yellow.
A second record, same year, same collection
This catalogue holds another work by the same painter dated 1883 and given the same Edinburgh collection. They are separate records with separate titles. The catalogue does not group them, and this page notes the coincidence of year and collection without turning it into a story about how or why either was made.
