About this Artwork
A word that names a way of riding
The title is a single French word for a woman on horseback. It carries a specification that the English word rider does not, and in a catalogue organised by function that specification matters: for most of the period covered here, a woman rode in a manner that required its own saddle, its own dress and its own set of expectations. The record files the work under portraiture, both male and female headings, and Animal Art > Horse.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1899 and the location is Tate Britain, in London. The dimensions are 55.5 x 42.5 cm. Post-Impressionism is the recorded style, French the recorded nationality, and the measured colour family of the image is ochre.
What the record leaves open
Nothing identifies the sitter, the setting or the occasion. The title supplies a category and the tags supply a horse, and between them they establish the function and stop. This page follows them and does not describe what the picture shows, because that description would come from looking at an image rather than from reading a record.
