About this Artwork

Riding as company

The title names two people and a wood, which puts the picture in the leisure group rather than the working one. Nothing is being carried, chased or raced. Riding in pairs through country was an occasion with its own etiquette, and the animals are the reason the occasion exists at all: they set its range, its pace, and who is able to take part in it.

What the record holds

The date of creation is 1901 and the location line reads Private Collection. The dimensions are not recorded. The record gives Post-Impressionism as the style term, French as the nationality, and red as the measured colour family of the image. Portraiture, male portraiture and Animal Art > Horse are the headings the record carries.

A late date among this painter's records

20 works by this painter are assembled in this catalogue, and 1901 is the latest date of creation among them, shared with one other entry. That places this record at the end of the sequence the catalogue holds. It is a statement about these records and nothing more; the catalogue carries no biography, and this page does not construct one.
