About this Artwork
Riding on named ground
The title names two sitters and the place they are riding, a hall, which is to say an estate. That combination is a genre of its own: owners shown on their own land, mounted, with the animal doing the same work it does in a state portrait but on behalf of a smaller claim. It asserts possession rather than sovereignty.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1777 and the location line reads Private Collection. The dimensions are 124 x 100.4 cm. Romanticism is the recorded style, British the recorded nationality, and the measured colour family of the image is yellow. Male portraiture sits alongside Animal Art > Horse in the headings.
The largest single group in this catalogue
31 works by this painter are assembled here, as many as by any other hand in the collection, and they run across the functional range: sporting subjects, driving subjects and animals shown on their own. The count is a fact about what was gathered rather than a judgement about importance, and this catalogue makes no ranking out of it.
