About this Artwork
A study is a picture with no scene in it
The title announces the work as a study of a single animal, identified by a coat term and nothing else — no name, no owner, no place, no task. That removes every function this register sorts by and leaves the animal as a problem to be worked out. Studies are how painters of horses acquired the vocabulary that the battle pieces, the racing pictures and the equestrian portraits then spend. They are also the most honest entries in a catalogue like this one, because they make no claim about an event at all.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1824 and the location is the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Rouen. The dimensions are 73.5 x 60 cm, which is substantial for a study — larger than several finished scenes in this batch. Romanticism is the style term and French the nationality attached to the painter. The measured colour family of the image is brown.
A tag with nothing behind it
This record carries Animal Art > Lion alongside Animal Art > Horse. Thirty-four entries in this register carry the lion heading, and it appears on a good many where the title gives no reason for it. This is one. The register prints the tag and declines to build anything on it.
