Hand-painted in oil
About this Artwork
Identified by an adjective, and nothing else
The title gives a nationality and a role: a rider, described as Polish. No name, no rank, no occasion. In a register organised around what the animal is doing, that absence is clarifying rather than frustrating, because it strips the picture down to the relationship the format is actually built on. A man is carried. The carrying is the subject. Everything an equestrian portrait normally adds on top of that — the identity, the title, the claim to command — has been left out of the record here, and what remains is the mounted figure as a type.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1655 and the location is the Frick Collection in New York. The dimensions are 135 x 114.9 cm, a size that sits between the cabinet pictures and the hall-scale state portraits catalogued here. Baroque is the recorded style and Dutch the nationality attached to the painter. The work is filed under male portraiture, Animal Art > Horse, and cultural heritage and mythology headings, and the measured colour family of the image is brown.
What this entry will not enter
Works of this standing generally carry a long argument about who made them and who is shown. This catalogue records neither argument, and this register is written from the catalogue. Nothing here should be read as taking a position on either question.
