About this Artwork
A horsewoman with no horse in the file
The title says horsewoman. The record files the work under female portraiture and nothing else: no Animal Art heading, no landscape, no setting. That gap is the most interesting thing the entry carries, and the practice on this site is to show it rather than to fill it in. A title is evidence about what a work was called. A missing tag is evidence about the catalogue, not about the picture.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1873 and the location is the Musée d"Orsay in Paris. The dimensions are not recorded. The record gives Impressionism as the style term, French as the nationality, and ochre as the measured colour family of the image.
Why the tags matter more than usual here
Roughly two thirds of the works gathered in this catalogue, 392 of 636, have no word for the animal in their titles at all. They arrived through a curated selection rather than through a keyword search, which means the headings usually do the identifying. When the title and the tags both fall short, as they nearly do here, the honest description is the short one: a named sitter, called a horsewoman, and a record that stops there.
