About this Artwork
A direction in the title
The title specifies which way the rider faces. Very few records assembled here carry an orientation in the name at all, and it reads as a way of telling one picture apart from another with the same subject. This catalogue does hold a second entry by the same painter whose title is the same phrase without the direction, dated earlier.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1911 and the location line reads Private Collection. The dimensions are 37.7 x 55.3 cm. Impressionism is the recorded style, and the measured colour family of the image is yellow. The subject headings are male portraiture and Animal Art > Horse.
A beach is a functional setting
Riding on sand is exercise or recreation. There is no course, no quarry and no load, which rules out the sporting and working categories by elimination rather than by assertion. Where this catalogue can place a picture in a functional group from its title alone, it does so; here the group is riding for its own sake, and the record supports nothing beyond that.
