About this Artwork
The yard, not the road
A coachyard is where the driven horse is kept, harnessed and turned out, the working infrastructure standing behind every carriage picture in this catalogue. The title names carriage horses, names the yard and names the estate, which fixes the function exactly without putting the vehicle in use at all.
A record filed under architecture
The only subject heading this record carries is architectural. There is no Animal Art heading anywhere on it, although the title names the animals in its first three words. This site reports the discrepancy rather than repairing it: the title is evidence about the work, the tags are evidence about the catalogue, and here the two disagree.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1838 and the location is the Yale Centre For British Art (Yale University), in New Haven. The dimensions are not recorded. Romanticism is the style term on the record and British the nationality; the measured colour family of the image is ochre. 17 works by this painter are assembled in this catalogue, spread across racing, hunting and driving subjects.
