About this Artwork
The failure case of the sport
Every functional category has an accident built into it, and in racing the accident is a fall. A picture of a fall is still a racing picture, but its subject is the separation of animal from rider: the moment the working relationship that defines the whole category stops working.
Two records with the same phrase
This catalogue holds another entry by the same painter whose title contains the fallen jockey, dated earlier and attached to a steeplechase. This one names nothing but the fall. The two are separate records. The catalogue does not say how or whether they are related, and this page does not decide it.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1898 and the location is the Kunstmuseum Basel, in Basel. The dimensions are not recorded. The record gives Impressionism as the style term, French as the nationality, and brown as the measured colour family of the image. Beyond a landscape heading and Animal Art > Horse the record carries nothing further. Of the 31 works by this painter assembled here, 1898 is the latest date of creation, which is the only chronological statement the catalogue supports.
