About this Artwork
An animal for rent
Hire is the plainest commercial relation a horse appears in anywhere in this catalogue. The title states it: these animals are stock, kept in a yard, available by the hour or the day to people who do not own them. It is a job description with no rider, no race and no owner attached, and it puts the picture in the trade group rather than the sporting one.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1887 and the location line reads Private Collection. The dimensions are 32.5 x 24 cm. Impressionism is the style term on the record and French the nationality; the measured colour family of the image is brown. Landscape, still life and vintage headings accompany Animal Art > Horse.
Six records, one hand
6 works by this painter are assembled in this catalogue, 4 of them dated in the 1880s, and several name a horse directly in the title. Read together they describe an interest in the animal at rest, in a yard or at a trough, rather than in motion. That is an observation about the titles gathered here and about nothing else.
