Hand-painted in oil
About this Artwork
A block of state portraits produced at one scale
This painter has eight works in the present register and six of them carry the same date, 1635. Read together they are not eight separate decisions but one campaign of large mounted and full-length portraits, sized to hang as a set: this entry is 297 x 309 cm, and the five other works dated 1635 measure 310 x 245, 314 x 301, 307 x 367, 301 x 314 and 305 x 320 cm. That consistency is the argument. When a court commissions at this scale and this uniformity, the individual sitter matters less than the wall of sitters, and the animal in each picture is doing institutional rather than personal work.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1635 and the location is the Museo del Prado in Madrid. The dimensions are 297 x 309 cm. Baroque is the recorded style and Spanish the nationality attached to the painter. The work is filed under portraiture, male portraiture, female portraiture and Animal Art > Horse, and the measured colour family of the image is brown.
Two tags that cannot both be right
The record carries male and female portrait headings on the same line, and it also carries a Photography category on a work dated 1635. These are artefacts of automated tagging. This register reports them and treats neither as evidence about the picture.
