Hand-painted in oil
About this Artwork
A cavalry type rather than a named man
The title names no sitter. It names a category: a hussar, which was light cavalry, and Hungarian, which locates the type. That is a different kind of picture from an officer's portrait. Where a portrait asserts a particular man's standing, a military type picture asserts a uniform, a role and a way of being mounted, and the horse in it is equipment belonging to the role rather than an attribute of an individual.
What the record holds
The catalogue gives 1857 as the date of creation and a private collection as the location. No dimensions are recorded for this work — the field is empty, and this entry will not supply a figure it does not have. Realism is the style term, Austrian the nationality attached to the painter, and the measured colour family of the image is yellow. It is filed under Animal Art and Animal Art > Horse, with no portrait category attached, which is consistent with a type rather than a sitter.
Why the missing measurement is stated
Sporting and military pictures of this class often passed between private owners without ever acquiring a published catalogue record. The consequence is thin data: no dimensions, no support, sometimes no more than a title and a date. Saying so is more useful than filling the gap.
