About this Artwork

A numbered pair whose numbers do not follow its dates

This register holds two works by this painter with the same title and a roman numeral: one is numbered I and dated 1880, the other is numbered II and dated 1877. The numeral that reads as first belongs to the later record. That is a small thing and a useful one, because a reader who assumes a numbered series runs in chronological order will get this pair backwards. In a catalogue, a numeral is a label attached at some point by someone; it is not evidence of sequence, and this register does not treat it as any.

What the record holds

The date of creation is 1880 and the location is the Belvedere in Vienna. No dimensions are recorded. Realism is the style term and Austrian the nationality attached to the painter. The categories are landscape and mountain — where the companion work of 1877 is filed as landscape and rural, so the two entries with the same title carry different settings in the record. The measured colour families of the image are ochre and yellow, the same as its companion.

The function, stated once for both

A market is where the animal is priced. This entry and its pair are two of only three titles in this register that name a horse market at all, and they are the closest this catalogue comes to showing the trade the rest of it depends on.
