About this Artwork

Riding as exercise, which is a function too

Not every mounted subject is display, sport, war or work. There is a fifth use, and this title states it: a ride, in the morning, on a beach. The animal is being exercised and the rider is taking air, and the picture belongs with the leisure entries in this register rather than with the equestrian portraits it superficially resembles. The distinguishing signs are in the record: no named sitter, group rather than individual portraiture, and a landscape heading doing most of the work.

What the record holds

The catalogue gives 1876 as the date of creation and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam as the location. The dimensions are 43.7 x 68.6 cm, a wide horizontal format. Realism is the recorded style and Dutch the nationality attached to the painter. The record files landscape and rural headings, group portraiture and Animal Art > Horse, and the measured colour family of the image is neutral.

What the time of day in a title does

Morning is not decoration in a subject like this. Exercise happened early, before the day's work, and a title that names the hour is naming the routine the picture belongs to. That reading comes from the title and from nothing else, and the catalogue offers no further detail to support or contradict it.
