About this Artwork

The British version of the same machine

The mounted portrait of a titled soldier was not a Continental speciality. British sitters used it on the same terms and at the same scale, and this entry is one of them: the title gives a marquess, the record files male portraiture together with Animal Art > Horse, and no battle, hunt or journey is attached. The animal is present to do what it does in every picture of this class — raise the sitter, absorb the weight, and be visibly under control while the man looks untroubled by any of it.

What the record holds

The date of creation is 1766 and the location is the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. The dimensions are 247.5 x 210.2 cm. Rococo is the style term recorded and British the nationality attached to the painter. The categories are unusually short for this register — portraiture, male portraiture, Animal Art and Animal Art > Horse, with nothing else — and the measured colour family of the image is yellow.

Why a short category list is worth noticing

Many entries in this catalogue carry eight or ten headings, several of which the title does not support. A record this bare is easier to trust: there is less in it that has to be argued away before the reader gets to the picture.
