About this Artwork
A mounted portrait late in the tradition
By 1902 the equestrian portrait had a long history behind it and a shrinking purpose. The horse was still in the picture, but it was no longer the only way to raise a sitter or to signal command. This entry is one of the late ones. The title names a private individual, the record files the work under male portraiture and Animal Art > Horse, and no office, campaign or event is attached to it.
What the record holds
The location line reads Private Collection, the commonest entry of its kind here, on 147 of 636 records. The dimensions are 254 x 165.1 cm, a full-length portrait scale. The record gives Realism as the style term, American as the nationality, and red as the measured colour family of the image.
What a private location means here
A private collection line is a statement about the last published source, not an address. It carries no owner, no date of sale and no history of ownership, and this catalogue holds none of those things for any work in it. Where a location is more specific, it is because a public collection published it.
