About this Artwork
A group portrait built on a horse
The record files this under group portraiture rather than under a single sitter, which changes how the mounted format works. In a solo equestrian portrait the animal separates one man from everyone else. In a group it sorts them: the figure on the horse is placed above the rest, and the rest are arranged in relation to him. The title names Louis-Antoine d'Artois, Duke of Angouleme, and prints his dates, 1775 to 1844, inside the title itself.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1824 and the location is the Château de Versailles at Versailles. The dimensions are 391 x 290.5 cm. The record gives Romanticism as the style term, French as the nationality, and brown as the measured colour family of the image. A cultural heritage heading accompanies Animal Art > Horse.
What the record does not carry
No campaign, no place and no occasion is attached. The title names a man and a title of nobility and stops. Where the mounted format is used to commemorate an event, this catalogue usually says so in the title itself; here it does not, and nothing else in the record fills the gap.
