About this Artwork
A team, named by its harness
A hitch is the arrangement by which animals are attached to a load. A team is what you call them once they are attached. This title names neither a place nor a person, only the working unit, and in a collection that spends much of its length on named sitters that is a clear signal about where the subject lies: with the labour rather than with an owner.
What the record holds
The date of creation is 1916 and the location line reads Private Collection. The dimensions are 99.06 x 113.67 cm. Realism is the recorded style, American the recorded nationality, and the measured colour family of the image is yellow. A rural landscape heading accompanies Animal Art > Horse.
Late in the record
99 of the 636 works assembled here carry a date of creation after 1900, and this is one of them. A working team in a twentieth-century record sits oddly beside the state portraits that open the collection three centuries earlier, but the catalogue makes no argument out of the contrast and neither does this page. It records a date and a job.
